ASLAM students explore the complete digital manufacturing workflow with ShiftVET
As part of Activity A2.3 of the Erasmus+ ShiftVET project, ASLAM organised a series of collaborative student projects designed to demonstrate how digital manufacturing technologies work together within modern furniture production.
Throughout the activities, students followed a complete digital workflow that combined 3D scanning, 3D printing and CNC machining. Beginning with the digitalisation of physical objects, participants learned how scanned data can be transformed into editable digital models before moving on to rapid prototyping and finally manufacturing wooden components using CNC technology.
This integrated approach enabled students to understand that advanced manufacturing is not based on isolated technologies but on connected processes that support product development from concept to production.

The practical nature of the projects encouraged active participation, collaborative problem-solving and autonomous decision-making. Students worked together to optimise designs, validate prototypes, prepare manufacturing files and assemble final products while developing technical competences directly linked to today’s digital woodworking industry.
The implementation also demonstrated the importance of adapting project activities to the realities of vocational education centres. Trainers highlighted the value of greater flexibility in scheduling and the need to align European project activities with existing workshop planning, allowing students to benefit even more from practical experimentation.
Overall, the experience confirmed the educational value of project-based learning supported by advanced manufacturing technologies. Students not only strengthened their technical knowledge but also gained a deeper understanding of how digital tools are transforming contemporary furniture production. The ShiftVET project continues to provide innovative learning opportunities that prepare future professionals for the digital transformation of the woodworking sector.
